SUBSTRATpro consists of spherically sintered quartz. The spherical shape allows a high bulk density. This means that the volume in the filter (filter baskets or modules) can be fully utilized. In addition, the optimized surface of the beads ensures intensive settlement of the important cleaning bacteria. A dense bacterial lawn is formed.

The high number of bacteria also reduces nitrite load peaks and extends the service life of the filter material.

EHEIM SUBSTRATpro is suitable for fresh and sea water, is washable and can be used multiple times.

Biological filter media

The main task of the biological filter material is to provide the best conditions for bacterial cultures to grow, so that a bacterial lawn develops after a short time. The bacteria feed on all kinds of dirt particles and convert the substances that are critical for the aquarium.

After the initial cleaning using mechanical filter media (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro), biological filtration is the most important thing. It ensures clear, healthy water and stable water values. That is why we have invested a lot of research into the development of biological filter media.

Tip:

Never clean or replace the entire biological filter material in one go (and never too thoroughly). The bacterial cultures must not be completely destroyed, otherwise the re-colonization will be delayed. The filter baskets in external filters and the filter modules in the aquaball and biopower internal filters are ideal for partial cleaning.
